Prof. Abel A. Leon is an accomplished aviation professional whose career reflects a unique combination of technical expertise in aircraft maintenance, dedication as an aviation instructor, and operational proficiency as a professional airline pilot. With more than 14 years of experience, he has developed a reputation as a versatile and highly capable leader in multiple facets of the aviation industry. Abel’s aviation career was built on a strong technical foundation. After completing an FAA-approved professional course in aviation maintenance at the Aviation Institute of Maintenance in Philadelphia in 2012, he quickly transitioned into the airline industry. He joined American Airlines at Philadelphia International Airport, where he served as an Aviation Maintenance Technician from 2013 to 2022.

During nearly a decade with American Airlines, Abel was entrusted with the maintenance of one of the most diverse and advanced fleets in commercial aviation. His work spanned a wide range of aircraft, including the Boeing 787, 777, 767, 757, 737; Airbus A330 and A320 series; Embraer 190; Bombardier CRJ200. He performed complex inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and system checks in compliance with FAA regulations and manufacturer standards. His technical proficiency earned him taxi-run qualifications on the Boeing 767, 757, 737, Airbus A330, A320, and Embraer 190—an achievement that highlights both his operational trustworthiness and his mastery of aircraft systems. Abel’s years on the hangar floor equipped him with a deep respect for the precision and accountability required to keep aircraft safe and reliable. Building on his technical expertise, Abel expanded his career into aviation education. In 2024, he joined Centura College – Aviation Institute of Maintenance at Northeast Philadelphia Airport as an Aviation Maintenance Instructor.

In this role, he develops and delivers comprehensive training programs designed to prepare students for certification as Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanics. His courses cover general aviation principles, airframe structures, powerplant systems, and regulatory requirements. Beyond teaching technical content, Abel places a strong emphasis on instilling safety culture, professional discipline, and problem-solving skills—qualities he considers essential for successful aviation professionals.Through his mentorship, Abel ensures that students not only master the technical curriculum but also learn how to apply these lessons in the high-stakes environment of real-world aviation operations. His ability to connect classroom instruction to hands-on airline experience makes him a respected figure among both his peers and his students.

In addition to his career as a maintenance instructor, Abel continues to serve in active airline operations. Since 2022, he has been a First Officer at Piedmont Airlines, flying the Embraer 145 regional jet out of Philadelphia International Airport. In this role, he supports captains in managing all phases of flight, conducts pre-flight inspections, and ensures safe and efficient operations in compliance with Part 121 airline standards.

Abel has accumulated over 2,364 total flight hours, including 1,430 hours as Pilot in Command and more than 760 hours in Part 121 turbine operations. He is a licensed Airline Transport Pilot (Multiengine Land) with an Embraer 145 type rating. His certifications also include Certified Flight Instructor – Airplane Single-Engine Land (CFI)Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument Airplane (CFII), and a FAA Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic Certificate.
